Discovering the mills of the Nohain valley :
The Maupertuis Mill
A visit to the Ecomusée de la meunerie and Maison de l'Eau et du Nohain is a must for families. Together, you can wander through the mill's upper floors before witnessing the highlight of the show: the start-up of the majestic bucket wheel.
You can also find out more about the River Nohain and its environment.
The Nohain runs for almost 50 km before emptying into the Loire at Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire (at the Gros Bouillon). Thanks to the river, many mills have provided the region with a rich industry, particularly in Donzy. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were 59 mills on the Nohain.
Another important site is Moulin l'Evêque, straddling the communes of Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire and Saint-Père, where the history of milling can be retraced in one street during visits organised from time to time.
Another wheel is turning in Donzy: that of the Moulin de l'Ile oil mill. For 150 years, its stone millstone has been powered by a hydraulic turbine installed on the Nohain to produce tasty oils.
This work, which respects a century-old tradition, has everything to please today, because as well as an inimitable taste, the production of the mill's walnut and hazelnut oils is characterised by almost zero energy consumption and zero waste!
An early morning visit to the Donzy oil mill. This is when the walnuts are ground and the aroma is magnificent! (and you can also buy hazelnut/nut oil soaps).
